If you’ve heard recently, there was a drop in oil prices around the world, although this may seem good news, it sure isn’t looking as good for fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrids. The recent oil drop have left American motorists be less concerned about saving the world and buying more fuel-efficient vehicles. Toyota even started to offer incentives and discounts on some electric-hybrid models including the Prius for the first time. Starting this month, Prius buyers in the United States can get 0% financing for two years or lease payments from $219 a month. Other manufacturers have also started to give discounts on its hybrid vehicles including the Honda Accord, the Ford Escape, and the Mercury Mariner Hybrid.

A report made by Autodata Corporation released a list of the top 20 vehicles for January of 2007. What was surprising to me was that there was a lot of American vehicles on the list.
Below is the complete list of the top 20 best-selling vehicles for January, along with the percent of change in sales.
1.) Ford F-Series -14.9%
2.) Chevrolet Silverado 0.7%
3.) Toyota Camry/Hybrid 14.7%
4.) Honda Accord/Hybrid 16.6%
5.) Toyota Corolla/Matrix 2.5%
6.) Chevrolet Impala 16.8%
7.) Nissan Altima/Hybrid 45.6%
8.) Dodge Ram 11.9%
9.) Dodge Caravan 14.3%
10.) Honda Civic/Hybrid -25.9%
11.) Honda CR-V 54.3%
12.) GMC Sierra 11.4%
13.) Toyota Tacoma 5.3%
14.) Chevrolet Cobalt -25.6%

Although the Ford F-Series remains the best selling vehicle in January, the sales compared to last year dropped by almost 15%. The biggest change among the list was the Nissan Altima and the Altima Hybrid. It should be quite obvious since the new Altima is a more aggressive improvement over the predecessor.
According to a recent study, the amount of aluminum used in new European cars have risen over these past few years. Starting with 50kg of aluminum in 1990, that number has increased to 132kg in 2005 and is expected to grow by another 25kg by 2010. Why aluminum? Aluminum is light, which allows the vehicle to save weight with a total fuel saving of 1 billion liters each year, as well as decreasing CO2 emissions.
The study focused on different aluminum semi-materials including the car components to the exterior sheets. Conducted by Knibb, Gormezano & Partners with the European Aluminum Association and was based off 15 million cars produced in Europe in 2005. Up until today, aluminum is being applied everywhere in the automotive industry to improve safety and performance, also, we can see from the new Jaguar XK-Type, the new aluminum body symbolizes a new era of design.
So why do Americans build bad cars? Is it because we have no taste in cars or is it because we have no originality? Jeremy Clarkson explains in the video above that Americans build bad cars because they have no aggression in their driving and they have no sense of time and competition. While some of that of what he said is true, not all facts that he stated are agree-able. Continue reading for my little thoughts and some comparison notes against major Japanese and German competitors.
